Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that impair vision over time, typically without warning or symptoms. Vision loss results from damage to the optic nerve, but how glaucoma causes this damage is not yet understood. It was originally thought that the optic nerve was damaged by high amounts of pressure. We now know that other factors must also be involved since patients without high intraocular pressure are losing sight as well. There is currently no cure for glaucoma; however, research is being conducted in search of one. Internationally recognized cataract and glaucoma surgeon Richard Lewis, M.D., of our Sacramento practice is involved in this research to find a cure. In the meantime, glaucoma surgery and other treatment options are available at Grutzmacher & Lewis to keep the disease from progressing.

If you fall into one of these high-risk categories, or are concerned that you may develop glaucoma and want to prevent vision loss, it is important to visit the eye doctor regularly. Our glaucoma surgeon, Richard Lewis, M.D., will be able to detect glaucoma if you have it and can recommend treatment to reduce the risks or results of the disease. To find out if you are eligible for glaucoma surgery or one of our glaucoma research studies in Sacramento, contact Grutzmacher & Lewis today.
