Glaucoma can impact anyone or any family. All people should be concerned about the glaucoma disease and the potential harm it could cause someone’s life. Because this disease is also known as the sneak thief of sight we must remind each other, especially our elders to get regular eye examinations. Early detection could save your vision.
Glaucoma: Those At Risk?
People at greater risk for glaucoma:
Anyone can be affected by glaucoma; however, there is a higher risk for:
- African-Americans
- Individuals over 60
- Those with a family history of glaucoma
- Asian-Americans are at a higher risk for Angle Closure Glaucoma, which accounts for less than 10 percent of cases
- Individuals using steroids, particularly the use of steroid inhalers for severe asthma
- Individuals that have suffered a blow to the head or a direct eye injury may develop glaucoma immediately after the trauma or years later
Glaucoma Awareness
Our doctors and staff want to remind you about the importance of routine eye exams. Many American citizens do a great job getting routine dental exams scheduled or even seeing their family doctors for a routine physical. Most people would agree that next to life itself nothing is more important than our ability to see. This is why the doctors at Grutzmacher & Lewis Surgical Eye Specialists want to continue education related to glaucoma. Because vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible, it is important to schedule regular and complete annual eye exams.
Almost two and a half million people have this disease, but half do not realize it because there are often no warning symptoms. Glaucoma is known as the silent-thief of sight because it silently steals your vision without you even realizing it. If you do not have routine annual eye exams to check the status of your eye health, glaucoma and other diseases may steal your vision.
