Richard A. Lewis, M.D., is a cataract surgeon and glaucoma specialist practicing in Sacramento, California. In addition to his busy private consulting practice, Dr. Lewis is actively involved in clinical research in national and international trials in glaucoma therapy. He is past president of the American Glaucoma Society and on the steering committee of the Association of International Glaucoma Societies. Richard A. Lewis is on the editorial board of the Journal of Glaucoma, Glaucoma Today, Focus on Glaucoma, and Ocular Surgery News and Video Journal of Ophthalmology. He also serves Glaucoma Today as the Chief Medical Editor.
Dr. Lewis attended the University of California, Berkeley as an undergraduate and received his doctorate in medicine from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. His ophthalmology training included a residency at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis, and a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology in Iowa City. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a co-founder of the Capital City Surgery Center of Sacramento, which specializes in cataract, glaucoma, and laser surgeries.
Dr. Richard A. Lewis has published over 60 articles focusing on glaucoma, ophthalmic surgery, and ophthalmic pharmacology. In addition, he has authored many book chapters including Postoperative Care, Laser Suture Lysis and Releasable Sutures, and Transscleral Laser Cyclophotocoagulation in Glaucoma Surgical Techniques. His video and computer productions include Tonometry, a video and CD-ROM published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, among other instructional pieces. Dr. Lewis teaches and lectures internationally on glaucoma and cataract surgery. Notably, Dr. Lewis has participated in 10 Project ORBIS missions, teaching physicians surgical and clinical techniques in third world countries. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor and Senior Honor Awards for his contributions in teaching and leadership and for initiating the AAO Subspecialty Day meeting.
A native of California, glaucoma and cataract surgeon Dr. Lewis lives in Sacramento with his wife; the couple has two grown children.
