Complications of Corneal Surgery

Complications associated with corneal transplants include infection, bleeding, glaucoma, and detachment or swelling of the retina. However, each of these can be treated.

In some cases, corneal transplants may be rejected. Rejections occur about 5 to 30 percent of the time. If this happens, the cornea will cloud and vision will worsen. However, a second corneal transplant procedure can be performed. Unfortunately, the rejection rate increases for repeat corneal transplants.

Symptoms of corneal rejection include: constant discomfort, sensitivity to light, redness, and change in vision. It is important for patients to report these symptoms immediately to our office at (916) 649-1515.
