Glaucoma can impact anyone or any family. All people should be concerned about the glaucoma disease and the potential harm it could cause someone’s life. Because this disease is also known as the sneak thief of sight we must remind each other, especially our elders to get regular eye examinations. Early detection could save your vision.
Anyone can be affected by glaucoma; however, there is a higher risk for:
- African-Americans
- Individuals over 60
- Those with a family history of glaucoma
- Asian-Americans are at a higher risk for Angle Closure Glaucoma, which accounts for less than 10 percent of cases
- Individuals using steroids, particularly the use of steroid inhalers for severe asthma
- Individuals with Diabetes or Hypothyroidism
- Individuals that have suffered a blow to the head or a direct eye injury may develop glaucoma immediately after the trauma or years later
